Bernice Julia Nelson Bernice Julia Nelson, 95, of Denton, Texas passed away in Lewisville, TX on November 14, 2013. She was born March 27, 1918 in Glenvil, Nebraska to William and Marie (Rabe) Schlachter. She married Leo Nelson of Edgar, Nebr. on October 28, 1937 in Santa Anna, CA. In March 1938 they returned to a farm three miles east of Edgar and lived there 44 years until retirement from farming in 1982. Her husband, Leo, passed away in 1983 after they moved to a home in the Edgar community. In 1989 she moved to Denton, TX to be near family. She was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Denton. Funeral services will be on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at the Denton Funeral Home, 120 S. Carroll Blvd, Denton, TX. St. Andrew Presbyterian Pastor Stephen W. Plunkett will officiate. Internment will be in the Edgar Nebraska Cemetery at a later date. Bernice is survived by her four loving children; Kay Harwood and husband U.B.”Butch” of Waukesha, WI; Bob Nelson and wife Karyn of Shady Shores, TX; Richard Nelson and wife Donna of Grapevine, TX; and Linda Schoch of Corinth, TX. She is survived by eight grandchildren; Virginia Kubicek & husband Todd of WI, Col. Robert J. Nelson & wife Kathy of Sumter, S.C., Matthew Nelson & wife Cynthia of Denton, TX, Mark Nelson & wife Leslee of Coppell, TX, Angela Durr & husband Brian of Cibolo, TX, David Nelson & wife Alicia of The Woodlands, TX, Michelle Tafflemeyer & husband Daryl of Corinth, TX and Sherrie McClain & husband Kelly of Hickory Creek, TX; and 17 great grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters and one brother; Vera Shuck, Merna Kinnison and Harlan Schlachter of Nebraska, Lylis Stephenson of Palm Springs, CA. A brother Melvin Schlachter and sister Donna Juggert both of Nebraska preceded her in death. Bernice enjoyed her music and was an accomplished pianist, organist and vocalist. She was active in many church and civic activities, including leading the choir for the First Presbyterian Church in Edgar. She provided piano and organ accompaniment in many church functions. She taught children’s Sunday school for many years. She provided many support activities for the rural one room school that her children attended. She was active in several St. Andrew Presbyterian Church activities. She was a kind and loving person, always with a pleasant smile and positive word for all. Arrangements are under the direction of Denton Funeral Home.
